Since the police custody death of Freddie Gray, shootings in Baltimore have skyrocketed while arrests have plummeted. Police are now hesitant to do their jobs in fear of landing in the court of public opinion, or in the court of law.
When Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby decided to charge six Baltimore Police Officers as a result of her independent Freddie Gray investigation (amid tremendous public pressure), it sent shock waves through the region generally and police departments specifically.
Baltimore must hold those accountable who hurt others or destroyed property.
The death of Freddie Gray has sparked controversy in yet another case of community-police distrust. It is important that both sides work to turn short-term adversity into long-term advantage.
